Vascular Surgery Procedures
Vascular Surgery Procedures
Common Vascular Surgery Procedures
Vascular surgery deals with diseases of arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. Procedures may be open surgery, endovascular (minimally invasive), or a combination of both.
These procedures are among the most frequently performed by vascular surgeons and cover the major arterial, venous, dialysis access, and lymphatic conditions.
-
Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA)
Removes plaque from the carotid artery in the neck.
Helps prevent stroke in patients with significant carotid stenosis.
Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS)
Placement of a stent to keep the carotid artery open.
Alternative to CEA in selected patients.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Repair
Open surgical repair or Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR).
Treats enlargement of the abdominal aorta to prevent rupture.
Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)
Endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms or dissections.
Peripheral Arterial Bypass
Creates an alternate route for blood flow around blocked arteries.
Examples: femoropopliteal bypass, femorodistal bypass.
Angioplasty and Stenting
Balloon dilation with or without stent placement.
Commonly used for peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
Endarterectomy
Surgical removal of plaque from an artery.
• • Commonly performed in carotid or femoral arteries.
-
Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula Creation
Preferred long-term access for hemodialysis.
AV Graft Placement
Synthetic graft used when native veins are unsuitable.
Dialysis Catheter Insertion
Temporary vascular access for dialysis.
-
Varicose Vein Surgery
Vein stripping, phlebectomy, or endovenous ablation.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) / Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency.
Venous Stenting
Treats venous obstruction, such as iliac vein compression.
Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter Placement
• • Prevents pulmonary embolism in selected patients.
-
Thrombectomy
Surgical or catheter-based removal of a blood clot.
Embolectomy
Removal of an embolus causing acute arterial occlusion.
Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis
Delivery of clot-dissolving medication directly into a thrombus.
Limb Salvage Procedures
Lower Extremity Revascularization
Bypass or endovascular intervention to restore blood flow.
Amputation
Performed when limb salvage is not possible due to severe ischemia or infection.
-
Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis (LVA)
Microsurgical treatment for lymphedema.
Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer (VLNT)
• • Transfers healthy lymph nodes to improve lymphatic drainage.
-
Diagnostic angiography
Balloon angioplasty
Stent placement
Atherectomy
Embolization
EVAR and TEVAR
